tile is just the finished surface and a successful tile installation is intrinsically linked to the wall system. a quality installer with experience with artisan tiles should follow manufacturer’s recommendations as well as adhesive manufacturer’s substrate recommendations and adhere to industry standards, like the tcna guidelines, to ensure a sound system and quality installation.
1. the tile concrete tiles are wet cast to size. tiles are not calibrated nor fully gauged, requiring system components and setting methods in accordance with (ansi 108.1 classified natural stone tile). tonal variation is inherent and to be expected within range and should be blended like stone tile. per tcna guidelines, a mock-up is always required. 2. handling + storage handle your consignment with care. inspect product carefully upon arrival. store crates indoors or cover to protect from elements. two crate maximum height. acclimate tiles to final installation environment for 48 hours. notify the manufacturer of any shipping damage or concerns immediately. do not install any material of concern. set aside for replacement. installed tile is considered accepted. handle tile with care. tile kept in the original crating is the best method for storage prior to installation. 3. mock-up per tcna guidelines, prepare a complete installation mock-up of the tile in its final environment. blend tiles from multiple crates to show tonal variations. mock-up should be pre sealed, grouted, and cleaned. mock-up should be reviewed and accepted prior to full installation.
4. substrate preparation substrate to be leveled to 1/8’’ (3mm) over 10’ (3m). clean all adhesives, grease, dirt and other contaminates from substrate. slab/screed should be cured to 4% moisture content–use tramex meter or similar to test waterproofing membrane should be used with slab on grade or where moisture is present. always follow adhesive manufacturer’s preparation instructions. honor all control joints in substrate. consider need for anti-crack/moisture mitigation laticrete hydroban. l/360 deflection in substrate. do not install over drywall, timber, or cement board. 5. installation materials adhesive: laticrete 254 platinum rapid. use laticrete latapoxy 300 on a steel substrate. grout: laticrete permacolor non-sanded grout. sealer interior: prosoco polishguard. sealer exterior: drytreat stain proof. 6. installation as it is a finished surface, tile should be in- stalled as late in the project as possible. blend tiles from different boxes to ensure desired pattern, layout and color variation is achieved. preseal tile prior to installation using polishguard prior to installation and grout. back-butter tile with 1/4” notched trowel ensuring 95% coverage with manufacturer recommended adhesive.
