tile is just the finished surface and a successful tile installation is intrinsically linked to the floor system. a quality installer with experience with artisan tiles should follow manufacturer’s recommendations as well as adhesive manufacturer’s substrate recommendations and adhere to industry standards, like the tcna guidelines, to ensure a sound system and quality installation. large format tiles require additional system considerations.
1. the tile concrete tiles are similar to natural stone tile (rectified/uncalibrated) to suit our stated caliber and size range which vary less in facial dimension than natural stone. edges are mechanically cut to achieve a more precise rectified dimension. tiles are not calibrated nor fully gauged, requiring system components and setting methods in accordance with ansi 108.1 classified natural stone tile. tonal variation is inherent and to be expected within range and should blend like stone tile. large format tiles (lft’s) in accordance with ansi 108.1 tnca standards, tiles greater than 15” are considered lft’s and require additional system considerations includ ing tile pattern, setting bed, substrate preparation and increased grout joint size. 2. handling + storage laguna tile will arrive in custom-made crates wrapped in plastic to protect in transit. inspect consignment carefully upon delivery. notify the manufacturer of any shipping damage or concerns immediately. do not install any material of concern. set aside for replacement. installed tile is considered accepted. handle tile with care. tile kept in the original crating is the best method for storage prior to installation. stack crates at a max. height of 2 crates if space is limited.
- -
store crates indoors or cover to protect from elements and construction site damage. tiles out of crate should be staged standing on edge face to face. do not pancake or flat stack. tiles should acclimate to the final environment for 48hr prior to installation. ensure you have ordered ample overage. we recommend 20% min., depending on the complexity of the design. 3. mock-up per tcna guidelines, prepare a complete installation mock-up of the tile in its final environment. blend tiles from multiple crates to show tonal variations. mock-up should be grouted, wet-scrubbed and sealed. mock-up should be reviewed and accepted prior to full installation. 4. substrate preparation concrete or cement board are suitable substrate, do not install tile directly to drywall or wood. substrate should be level. maximum variation in substrate no more than 1/8” over 10’. sound substrate, L/360 deflection required. use laticrete 3701 fortified mortar to build up substrate. slab or screed should be cured to within 4% moisture content using a tramex meter. substrate should be clean and free of all adhesives, grease, dirt and other contaminants.

establish expansion joint locations based on substrate and site conditions. install anti-fracture and or moisture barrier like laticrete hydroban, in consideration of substrate i.e., slab-on- grade, moisture prone environment, existing cracks and movement in substrate. 5. installation materials thin-set: laticrete 254 platinum rapid. grout: laticrete permacolor sanded grout. cleaning pad: htc twister white. sealer: prosoco polishguard. special consideration for walls or wet areas. 6. installation use laticrete 254 platinum rapid thin-set or approved equivalent. use laticrete 4xlt rapid medium-set or approved equivalent for large format tile or as required. follow adhesive manufacturer’s recommendations. blend tiles from different crates to enhance natural tone and character. back-butter tile to ensure 100% adhesive coverage. use 1/2”- 3/4” notched trowel. hand-set tile, avoid using mallets and excessive force. maintain grout joint of 0.5 % of the longest tile edge, no less than 1/8”. place expansion joints spaced at 15’ in each direction. place flexible expansion joints at all perimeters walls and columns. honor all substrate expansion and control joints in tile finish. refer to tcna guidelines as frequency of movement joints may increase based on site conditions. protect tile surface avoid leaving adhesive, tape, wet sponges or buckets that can stain tile surface.
-
be diligent in removing any adhesive from surface before drying. protect installation adequately with ramboard and/or masonite. 7. grout grout tiles using laticrete permacolor sanded grout. grout joints are a direct function of ansi minimums for uncalibrated natural stone tiles specific to installation pattern and natural warpage to reduce floor lippage. grout joint should be at least 0.5% of the longest edge and considerate of expected curvature. the grout joint should not be less than 1/16” eg 12”x24”x5/8” tile - joint min ⅛” + longest edge (24” x -.05 (curvature factor) = (3/32) = (⅛”+3/32”) = 7/32” tiles can be pre-sealed with an impregnating sealer to aid in grout release. float the whole tile surface, not just the grout joints. follow grout manufacturer’s recommendtions. 8. wet-scrub ensure grout is fully cured prior to wet- scrubbing. ensure tile is cleaned, free of all dust and debris. wet-scrub with floor-machine using htc twister white pad. use ample clean warm water. work in small + manageable sections. proper wet-scrubbing will create a slurry. be diligent removing all slurry water. use a shop-vac. if needed. follow with a clean mop. for smaller areas and vertical surfaces, an or- bital hand-sander with a small cut-out of htc twister white pad can be used. the wet-scrub process is transformative in im- proving the overall floor finish as well as preparing for sealer. re-apply floor protection during construction.

9. seal ensure tile and grout is completely dry prior to sealing. use prosoco polishguard. follow sealer manufacturer’s recommendations. apply several thin coats of sealer. apply using microfiber applicator dampened with sealer. work in small and manageable sections to allow sealer to dry between coats. sealer should be applied to maintain a natural finish (non-glossy). do not over apply sealer and wipe off any excess. allow proper dry time and cure time (7 days) prior to use. re-apply floor protection during construction. 10. care + maintenance ensure your floor has been adequately wet-scrubbed and sealed prior to use. should water or liquid not bead up on the surface, additional sealer coats can be applied to ensure tiles repel spills. caring for your concrete tile is relatively simple with routine maintenance. concrete tiles are made of naturally occurring raw materials and much like natural stone patina with age. for the life span of the installation periodic deep clean and rejuvenation can occur. 11. routine care clean floor daily. use warm clean water and ph neutral (non-acidic) detergent. residential: mop regularly. commercial: use floor machine/auto scrub regularly. frequency of maintenance depends on traffic and use. wipe up spills immediately. give immediate attention to acidic liquids like lemon juice. follow sealer manufacturer’s recommendations.
12. future rejuvenation periodically a deeper clean can rejuvenate floors appearance and add protection. ensure tile is cleaned and free of all dust and debris. wet-scrub with floor-machine using htc twister white pad. use ample clean warm water. work in small and manageable sections proper wet-scrubbing will create a slurry. be diligent in removing all slurry water. use a shop-vac. if needed. follow with a clean mop. for smaller areas and vertical surfaces, an orbital hand-sander with a small cut-out of htc twister white pad can be used. the wet-scrub process is transformative in improving the overall floor finish as well as preparation for resealing. reseal with prosoco polishguard. follow sealer manufacturer’s recommendations. apply several thin coats of sealer. apply using microfiber applicator dampened with sealer. work in small and manageable sections to allow sealer to dry between coats. sealer should be applied to maintain a natural finish (non-glossy). do not over apply sealer and wipe off any excess. if you have any questions please contact our technical team: tech@concrete-collaborative.com
